Privacy Impact Assessments
One of the first steps in the process of developing privacy management plan is completing a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA). The PIA process will allow you to identify your organization's privacy weaknesses and strengths and allow you to strategically identify where improvements need to be made. A PIA acts as an administrative safeguard for organizations. This assessment is used to review administrative practices and/or information systems that are used in relation to the collection, use or disclosure of individually identifying personal and/or health information.
LemonLogix can help you complete a comprehensive PIA. We offer a wide range of support to fit your needs, from training and hands-on writing assistance, to feedback on a PIA you have written yourself and assistance in reviewing feedback from the privacy commissioner, to writing your PIA for you.
Completing a PIA is and important tool to focus on the best ways to safeguard patient information. This should be done early on in organizational development so mitigation strategies can be integrated as soon as possible. PIAs can be complex, depending on the scope of your program or organization and the number and variety of stakeholders involved.
In Alberta, PIAs are completed by custodians whenever there is a new business process or system involving information. Section 64 of the Health Information Act (HIA) requires the custodians to submit a PIA for review by the OIPC in order to ensure compliance. A PIA is also highly recommended for all organizations that handle personal information.
